Car Noises and Oil Drips
If your car 'speaks' to you, it's usually obvious that something is wrong, something needs fixing. Here are some common car sounds and what it could mean:
Click (rhythmic, high metallic threading) – could indicate a loose wheel cover, faulty wheel bearings, bent or loose fan blade, low oil in the engine, loose manifold heat control valve.
Clunk (or dull roar) – possibly a faulty universal joint or rear differential, transmission oilcould be low.
Heavy Knock (or whipping) – worn main bearing crankshaft, connecting rod or loose bolts in a bad torque converter.
Ping (or tapping) – car may need to tune up; octane fuel may be too low in the engine.
Screech (or scraping metal sound) – possible brake problem.
Squeak (or high-pitched grating) – defective drum pads, chassis lubrication needs; worn suspension bush.
Squeal (high-yelp) –underinflated tires, wheels, wrong, loose or worn power steering fan or air conditioning compressor belt.
Thud (low, metallic percussion) – loose pulley, worn crankshaft bearings, loose exhaust pipe.
Access Drips
Drops or puddles beneath your car might be an early sign of trouble. In order to drop more recognizable, you may want to bring a large sheet of paper, preferably paper that will not absorb the liquid under the car overnight. The most commondrips, and what they show:
Water – probably just condensation from your air conditioning.
Green or yellow spots – the coolant and you could be a bad water pump or a leak in the radiator or heater hoses have.
Red drops – usually transmission fluid. You need new transmission seals.
Black or dark slippery liquid – probably oil, you have to be an engine leak that needs repair.
Thin, watery spots that smell like gasoline – when itsmells of petrol, it probably is. Be very careful, because gasoline leaks are the leading cause of car fires.
Oily liquid with little color – to point out, brake fluid, checked out your brake system.
