Start A Major Car Rental Company – Accidentally
My good friend Dick [first name only] had a great chance for the eye and he convinced me to take him on a car rental company, where he was General Manager. He assured me that the company is in its last throes, and it was an excellent chance that we could negotiate for the assets, if they went bankrupt.
That is exactly what happened, and 1 July 1967 we were the owner of Capital Rent A Car, Inc. 1st National Bank of Fort Lauderdale gave us the 88 cars that theyinstead of title plus $ 20,000 initial working capital and a two months moratorium on payment of the car. Of course, the cars were not worth anywhere near the money owed to them, and we do not have two pennies to rub together. But jumping is no other way, we are in.
Over the next seven years, we have only had cash-making decisions, never a business decision. Problem was, we were always short on the cash side. We grew because we were aggressive and innovative but always cash short. Tostay alive in the next seven years, we have asked for and received moratoriums and we kited checks, which we always good.
We were the business with major lenders, GMAC, Ford Motor Credit, Chrysler, and about 4 to 5 local banks. They were all cooperative activities between the realization that we are two nice guys who were sincere were stupid, but sadly inadequate. However, there was a company that we do not fool around with. The Harry, a small local car-leasing business had. We thought thatall of our lenders are in business to borrow money. Not Harry, he was in business to earn a living. Although Harry has been a major, 75 or 80%, a good partner Harry healed and have always paid on time without knowing it, that dividends paid.
Came 1973, and brought the Arab-Israeli Yom Kippur War, as well as higher gasoline prices and a gasoline embargo in the following spring. Our business model was translated to the right size car which now means that no sub-compressed, and heavy on the mid-size andFull-size cars. Therefore, after the 73-74 season, we could not dispose of unnecessary inventory. Buy With higher gas prices and gas shortages car wholesalers wanted fuel efficient sub-compressed, and perhaps a few compressed. Mid-size and full-size truck sales were essentially proof. What had been offered for the larger vehicles that do not receive enough to pay off the loans and the title. And we do not have the money to the title, so we buy at the end of the search on unnecessary cars.
InMay surrounded by this rust fleet, we were thinking about the future, especially the 20 August. In Florida, back in 1974, all rental car did have the next year to purchase tags to this date. We were looking at $ 20,000 and that was all what we can do is search. With bankruptcy staring us in the face, we thought about our options.
That's when Harry came to mind. He said he had always wanted to rent a car in the daily business. Leasing cars was good, but we were in the exciting partof the company. He said it not once, he said, there must be a dozen times. Well, we could help him.
Fortunately, Harry never knew our financial difficulties, and we should let more cars than we could. So it was not unusual for us 400 Dodge Dart shipped in June for our summer lease. In July, after the cars were delivered, we gave Harry the news. We did not have the money to the cars and our only alternative was filing bankruptcy license. As Harry expected, a HungarianImmigrants with a temper, which exploded. We reminded him that he was always in the car rental. He had his majority partner to speak. Our building leases could be negotiated, would pay the utilities and Southern Bell had him hold the phone numbers if their bills were paid. And Dick and I look forward to the new social work and offer our expertise [?].
And that's exactly what happened. Dick and I went for business and personalBankruptcy. The new company opened its doors on 1 September 1974 in our five locations, Miami, Ft Lauderdale, Orlando, Tampa and West Palm. John had his accountant acting as President, until Mike was recruited as president 1976th Mike had first refusal John should always sell for the company.
The name of the leasing company was Harry's Alamo Leasing. Logically, the name of the car rental company was Alamo Rent A Car, a large car rental company. But this isnot the rest of the story. Everything worked well, very good for the players.
To finish the story, you should know that was the majority partner, John, John D. MacArthur, John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation Trust.
John died in the autumn of 1977 and Mike have a group of 8 other people, the business of the Board of Trustees in 1978. They do not know the price, but I am sure that the trustee does not say: "We take a write-off." Mike finally but to my knowledgethe remaining shareholders and sold the company for a considerable sum, hundreds of millions during the late 90s.
Harry received around 250,000 dollars for his 20 or 25% of the shares of the company. Can you believe he started a car rental company about 1992 and named it Capital Rent A Car. When I questioned the wisdom of what he said was the name for me, bad luck, but luckily for him. I'm not so sure he died a few years later before Capital moved to the next level.
As for me, ifPeople ask, what do I have if I went bust, I told them that I no longer scratch.
